Twyford Cookery School Officially Opens with Special Guest Tom Adams

Twyford School proudly marked the official opening of the Twyford Cookery School on Saturday, a significant milestone in our commitment to culinary education. The ceremony was led by Tom Adams, Old Twyfordian and award-winning owner of Coombeshead Farm, who had the honour of raising the apron to inaugurate the new facility.

Following the opening, Mr Adams conducted a masterclass with senior pupils, guiding them through the process of making a steamed marmalade pudding. The session was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to be inspired by his passion for food and storytelling through cooking, making the experience both engaging and memorable.  He commented:

“It has been a real honour to open the Twyford Cookery School. It is a brilliant space for learning and there will no doubt be years of enjoyment in this new facility. It was so inspiring to see children of all ages take an interest in cooking and food production.

The production of food and the art of cooking affects us three times a day, if not more, and yet it is a skill that seems to diminish with every generation as convenience and commodity food prevails. Instilling these skills in the next generations is vital if we are going to develop any form of food culture in this country.

Kudos to Twyford School for taking this forward.”

Starting this term, in the lead-up to the launch, children in all year groups in the Prep School have been enjoying taster sessions in the Cookery School, sparking enthusiasm and excitement for food and cooking. Looking ahead, weekly timetabled cookery lessons for every year group will be incorporated into the curriculum from September, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to discover the joys of cooking and develop essential culinary skills as part of their learning journey.

The event also saw the unveiling of the latest edition of The Twyfoodian, our school’s much-loved cookbook. This new edition features a collection of recipes that celebrate both classic and contemporary dishes, and all proceeds from its sales will directly support our partnerships programme, which benefits local communities.

Headmaster Andrew Harvey, expressed his enthusiasm:
“The Twyford Cookery School is a space where pupils can develop their skills, creativity, and passion for food. We are thrilled to have launched it in such a special way and are grateful to Tom Adams for sharing his expertise. It is particularly exciting that cookery will become a regular part of the curriculum from September, allowing all pupils to gain valuable culinary experience and discover the joys of cooking.”
